Coal and lignite briquettes are fossil fuels, or fuels pressed from lignite. They deliver high energy density but clearly differ from wood pellets and wood briquettes in CO₂ balance and often in local regulations.
When they still play a role
In some existing stoves and regions, lignite briquettes are still in use. Before switching, check: device approval, chimney sweep, storage space and emissions.
Comparison to wood fuels
- Wood pellets — biogenic, often automated heating
- Wood briquettes — pressed wood for fireplace and stove
- Firewood — logs, manual
- Coal / lignite briquettes — high energy density, fossil footprint
Environment and costs
The price per kilo alone says little. Decisive are heating value, ash, manual work and local rules. For many households with a modern boiler, wood pellets or briquettes are the clearer long-term option — see also environment & CO₂.
